2014 Philanthropic Project: Ronald McDonald House

Members of the High Desert Design Council (HDDC) completed a refresh of guest rooms and common areas of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Oregon in November for the organization’s 2014 philanthropic project: “Refreshing the House that Love Built.”

HDDC members donated time and resources—and drummed up support from businesses and local contractors—to spruce up the six guest rooms of the Ronald McDonald House in Bend, a haven for out-of-town families with hospitalized children.

According to project chair, Charmaine Manly, 12 interior designers were involved in the project, along with other supporting HDDC members. Design teams developed ideas for the main common area and each guest room and bath using the theme, “serenity.” Painting was donated by HDDC member Webfoot Painting. Interior design work will continue throughout the year.

HDDC received strong community support—and donations—to freshen up Bend’s Ronald McDonald House. “The structure is in excellent shape. But after 17 years, the interior was feeling a little dated,” explained Manly. HDDC welcomed all volunteers interested in the joining the project.

Bend’s Ronald McDonald House was built by hundreds of community volunteers using all-donated materials. The charity opened its doors in 1997 and has served more than 2700 families in Central and Eastern Oregon. Ronald McDonald House functions as a “home-away-from-home” for out-of-town pediatric patients and their families seeking medical treatment in Bend. The HDDC selects a community-based philanthropic project each year. Last year, HDDC members remodeled a section of the Saving Grace emergency shelter with donations and support from several local businesses.

The High Desert Design Council (HDDC) is a non-profit business association supporting and promoting Central Oregon’s professional applied and decorative arts community. The HDDC offers promotion and marketing opportunities, continuing education workshops, and venues for industry networking.
